Announcing the Basys MX3
March 24, 2017
Digilent, a leader in designing and promoting student owned hardware, continues to demonstrate their commitment to ECE education with the release of the Basys MX3 PIC32MX370 microcontroller trainer board and associated coursework, "Embedded Systems with Basys MX3 and PIC32MX370." Designed from the ground up around the teaching experience, the Basys MX3 is a true MCU trainer board that enables the teaching of one to two semesters of embedded systems, and other related microcontroller courses, all with a single hardware platform.
Through the onboard programmer/debugger, the Basys MX3 provides easy access to its onboard peripherals including motor drivers, displays, common user interfaces such as buttons, LEDs, switches and potentiometers, audio in and out, sensors, and common communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART and IrDA. The Basys MX3 costs $99 and is available for order at store.digilentinc.com.
The Basys MX3 also provides access to additional I/O through the two onboard Pmod ports and Analog Discovery 2 connector. The Pmod ports provide the option to expand the capabilities of the board even further by adding any of Digilent's expansive line of Pmod add-on boards, while the Analog Discovery 2 connector is especially useful for signal investigation throughout the learning and debugging process. The Basys MX3 is designed for use with the Microchip MPLAB X professional grade and free toolset and is also supported in Arduino IDE.
"The Digilent Basys MX3 is the first board in the popular Basys trainer board family specifically designed for teaching microcontroller and embedded systems fundamentals. With the popular Microchip PIC32, a full set of useful and engaging I/O, and support for both the simplified Arduino and powerful MPLAB X IDEs, the board creates an engaging experience that scales with the student's skills." - Steve Johnson, President
To help instructors update existing material or design new embedded systems related courses, the Basys MX3 is accompanied by a full coursework, libraries, and an associated hardware Lab Bundle. Support includes:
"Embedded Systems with Basys MX3 and PIC32MX370" completes a full walkaround of the board's features and includes extensive teaching material plus 15 complete labs. It is designed for use with MPLAB X IDE and is entirely free and open source. The coursework can be viewed and downloaded at reference.digilentinc.com/reference/microprocessor/basys-mx3/start.
Basys MX3 Library Pack provides a set of libraries that allow users to easily access each of the board's peripherals. These libraries are for users looking to hide the hardware implementation details and call the needed functionality quickly and intuitively. The libraries can be downloaded on the Digilent Github at github.com/Digilent/Basys-MX3-library.
Basys MX3 Lab Bundle is a hardware bundle that includes all hardware necessary to complete the “Embedded Systems with Basys MX3 and PIC32MX370” labs. It is available for order at store.digilentinc.com.
