What is the Analog Discovery 2?

Digilent Analog Discovery 2 is a USB oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and multi-function instrument that allows users to measure, visualize, generate, record, and control mixed-signal circuits of all kinds. Developed in conjunction with Analog Devices and supported by Xilinx University Program. This test and measurement device is small enough to fit in your pocket, but powerful enough to replace a stack of lab equipment, providing engineering professionals, students, hobbyists. and electronic enthusiasts the freedom to work with analog and digital circuits in virtually any environment, in or out of the lab. The analog and digital inputs and outputs can be connected to a circuit using simple wire probes; alternatively, the Analog Discovery BNC Adapter and BNC probes can be used to connect and utilize the inputs and outputs.

Driven by the free WaveForms software (Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible) software, Analog Discovery 2 can be configured to work as any one of several traditional test and measurement instruments including an Oscilloscope, Waveform Generator, Power Supply, Voltmeter, Data Logger, Logic Analyzer, Pattern Generator, Static I/O, Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, Impedance Analyzer, and Protocol Analyzer.

USB Oscilloscope

Analog Discovery 2 among compatible add-on boardsThe Analog Discovery 2 is designed to be a portable alternative to a stack of benchtop equipment. It's durable enclosure measures (3.23 inch x 3.25 inch x7/8inch) and fits in a pocket. The Analog Discovery can be connected to circuits and designs via the included female flywires, or used in conjunction with the included gender changers when a male connection is necessary.

Accessories can be purchased separately to provide additional functionality, such as the BNC Adapter for higher bandwidth and BNC connectors, or the Breadboard Adapter and Breadboard Breakout for a direct connection to the breadboard, or the Impedance Analyzer for additional Impedance measurement functionality. The Analog Discovery 2 comes packaged in a durable project box that will fit all the included accessories and some additional adapter boards. The project box measures (7" x 5.75" x 1.5") and provides even more durability when stashing your portable Oscilloscope and multi-function instrument in your backpack or briefcase.

For improved Power Supplies, integrated BNC connectors and a replaceable breadboardable interface check out the Analog Discovery Studio.

What is WaveForms?

WaveForms is the free software application for the Analog Discovery 2 and enables use of the available analog and digital instruments. The software has been refined by customer feedback for over 10 years and features a computer and laptop friendly user interface that has the feel of traditional benchtop software. The Analog Discovery 2 communicates with WaveForms via a USB connection to your computer, allowing users to capture, record, analyze, and generate mixed signal and mixed domain waveforms. WaveForms can be downloaded and installed in under 60 seconds and can be tested without hardware using its demo mode feature. In addition to the use of instruments in the application, the WaveForms application has a script editor tool, which allows custom scripting of the instrument in JavaScript. WaveForms is designed to be run on a laptop or desktop computer and is Mac, Windows, and Linux compatible.

The following instruments are available in the WaveForms application for the Analog Discovery Studio:

WaveForms Spectrum Analyzer

  • Oscilloscope
  • Waveform Generator
  • Power Supplies
  • Voltmeter
  • Data Logger
  • Logic Analyzer
  • Pattern Generator
  • Static I/O
  • Spectrum Analyzer
  • Network Analyzer
  • Impedance Analyzer
  • Protocol Analyzer

For even more customization potential, the WaveForms Software Development Kit (SDK) can be used to create custom applications and scripts in Python, C, and additional languages. The Analog Discovery 2 is also compatible with LabVIEW and the Mathworks MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox.

    Plug and play

Posted by Jack on 29th Apr 2020

Very nice 2-channel scope and waveform generator. Very nice software and fast data transfer compared to any of my Rigols. No messy difficulties setting it up, even on Linux! Two features I miss: 1. Real-time lock-in amplifier, i.e., the ability to stream continuous demodulated data. This requires the demodulation and filtering to happen on the FPGA, though, so perhaps it's difficult to implement with this hardware. 2. Clock ins and outs. If we could sync multiple AD2's, it would be SUPER powerful. Still, can't go wrong for a few hundred bucks!!

    Seems good so far

Posted by Digilent Customer on 28th Jan 2020

I used this last year as a rental for school and it was always pretty straight forward and simple to use. Great for doing stuff at home. I bought one this year for myself and it works great so far. I haven’t tried to do anything to fancy yet and I know it has limitations, but it works for what I need it to do.

Can be somewhat confusing to use sometimes, but gets the job done for a multitude of tasks very nicely.

    Great Instrument

Posted by J. Kretzschmar on 18th Dec 2019

Our university recently designed home-based labs for two online electrical engineering courses incorporating the Analog Discovery 2 in the lab kits to be provided to the students. Experience with the AD2 throughout the development of the labs has been great. We did not use all of the features, however, what we did use worked out perfectly for the purposes of the courses (+/- 5 volt power supply, oscilloscope, waveform generator, and logic analyzer). Because of the availability of the AD2 we are now able to offer a select number of courses with labs online at our university. This is a wonderful instrument for a student, or hobbyist.

    Two thumbs up!

Posted by Digilent Customer on 15th Nov 2019

I recently purchased an Analog Discovery2, as well as the Analog Parts Kit, and have been blazing my way through the Real Analog lessons found on this site (https://learn.digilentinc.com/classroom/realanalog/). Fun! The course is really outstanding, especially the included video lectures. Thank you Digilent! The Analog Discovery2 seems well made, and so far, works as intended, but admittedly, I have not yet tried all the features. Installing the Waveform software on my mac was simple.

Excellent hardware, software takes some getting used to

Posted by Seth on 13th Aug 2019

The hardware is ideal, good number of channels and configuration options. The software is so/so, it's not very intuitive and navigation around the wave forms is very tricky. Trying to isolate specific parts of the wave form can be a trying experience. Albeit, I run on a mac and I think the software is mainly focused towards Windows users, so the navigation might be smoother on that platform.

Great piece of Hardware with a steep learning curve for customization

Posted by Digilent Customer on 5th Aug 2019

This system works great with the out-of-the-box Waveforms software and offers a powerful SDK for customization. However, the learning curve on the development environment is very steep and the documentation at times does not include all the necessary details. I have had to ask a substantial number of 'dumb' questions on the forum to get started, and continued to do so throughout the process of developing my custom applications -- and responses to those questions are not always timely or particularly helpful. I am ultimately able to get the system to do exactly what I need it to every time, but it can be a h*** of an uphill battle.

the Analog Discovery 2, a unit that has a long history of development, it really shows what a mature product can do.

Posted by Digilent Customer on 26th Jul 2019

"the Analog Discovery 2, a unit that has a long history of development, it really shows what a mature product can do. I found little that couldn't be done with this device that any technician would need in a very portable device. The Waveforms software is fully utilized to it's extent and I could find very little to improve on." Great Hardware, Software, and Support

Posted by michael noel on 18th Jun 2019

The hardware and software are both great, and if there is a corner case feature that is needed they are often able to update the software to support it in a few months. Great product and great company!
