The Pmod USBUART provides a USB to UART cross-conversion through the FTDI FT232R. Users may send data in either direction on the Pmod and receive the converted data in the appropriate format.

Note: There are two UART signal pin assignment conventions in use on Digilent products. This product uses the new signal assignment convention. Connecting a product using the new convention with one using the old convention requires the use of a UART Crossover Cable (not included). Click here for a more detailed explanation.

    USBUART

Works as described. I use this to add COM ports to projects that use Microblaze designs where the hardened ports are used by the Arm processors.

    PMOD USBUART

This is a simple way to add an extra port to your board under test. If you are using the USART thru the debug connection, in my case an ATTiny817 Xplained connected to MPLABX, the throughput is limited because the port is shared with the debugger. This PMOD gives me an alternative which will run at much higher BAUD and can be selected within MPLABX for use with Data Visualizer or whatever you want.

    Very useful

It works very well, just like any of the onboard UARTs of various Digilent boards (FTDI chip). For those Digilent boards with DB9 connector or if you just need that extra UART, this makes it easier (and less bulky) to connect.
